US President Donald Trump said on Friday that “China made a mistake” by retaliating with tariffs. “They panicked.” Earlier, China announced it would impose 34% tariffs on all goods imported from the United States in response to the tariff hike announced by the Republican on Wednesday.

Panicking and retaliating against the US was “the one thing they cannot afford to do,” Trump added in a post on his Truth Social profile.

With a better-than-expected jobs report in hand, President Trump turned his attention Friday morning to China. U.S. employers accelerated hiring in March even as some data suggested underlying weakness in the labor market and the impact of the Trump administration’s economic policies was only just beginning to play out.

Employers added 228,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said Friday, a much larger-than-expected increase from a revised 117,000 in February. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%.
