NATO Strategic Response and Operations

Political Analysis and International Reactions

Vladimir Putin raised Tu-22M3 bombers in a new wave of show of force, and the UN Security Council warned that Moscow's moves could lead to global conflict. Videos show Russia's long-range air force carrying out an airstrike on a"simulated enemy" with the aim of "disrupting the command system and destroying critical objects".

At the same time, Bastion missile systems from the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean engaged targets with Onyx missiles during the exercise.

Putin further provoked the West by deploying nuclear-capable Iskander missile systems near the Polish border. Previously, Russian drones violated Polish airspace, which is why Poland, with the help of NATO allies, shot them down. In response, Warsaw closed the border with Belarus, while the UN Security Council warned of a serious threat of world war.

Because of this, NATO has urgently strengthened the defense on the eastern wing, and Great Britain will also participate in these efforts. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Operation East Guard  will start in the coming days and will involve forces from Britain, France and Germany.

In addition to classic military capabilities, Rute pointed out that the focus will also be on the fight against drones, while the British Ministry of Defense said that London is ready to contribute.

Putin's moves are part of the four-day"West-2025" exercise taking place in Russia, Belarus and the Arctic, which NATO sees as a direct challenge. During them, rehearsing the use of nuclear weapons from the territory of Belarus is planned, while there is speculation about the deployment of the new ballistic missile Orešnik  in that country - right next to the border with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.

On the highway near the Polish border, Iskander-M systems with a range up to 500 kilometers and the ability to carry nuclear warheads similar in strength to the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were observed.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Andrey Meljnyk warned that, if Putin does not stop,"tomorrow drones or missiles could fall on Berlin, Paris or London - and the day after tomorrow, who knows, maybe across the Atlantic."

And while the UN warns of the "ambis of the Third World War", signals are coming from Moscow that the peace negotiations with Kiev are"on pause".

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is threatening new sanctions against Russia, but with the demand that NATO countries stop buying Russian oil.

In parallel with the exercises in Belarus, dozens of Russian ships and submarines were deployed in the Baltic Sea, while Northern Fleet ships were deployed in the Arctic Ocean. Tank exercises from hidden positions are also carried out on Belarusian training grounds.

Poland and NATO allies have already raised the level of readiness and deployed about 40,000 soldiers a near the Belarusian border.

The General Staff of Belarus said that it is"vigilantly monitoring the situation and is ready to respond to any provocation during the exercises".

On the political stage, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Odessa, joining Prince Harry and other Western officials in supporting Ukraine.

British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper, during her first visit to Kiev, announced a new package of 100 sanctions against Moscow, including companies that supply the Russian army with technology and chemicals, as well as 70 ships from the so-called"shadow fleet" that illegally transports oil.

"Great Britain will not stand by while Putin continues his barbaric invasion. His complete disregard for sovereignty was shown when he violated NATO airspace with drones. It is necessary to increase the pressure and cut off the money flows that finance this illegal war," said Cooper.

She emphasized that she will discuss these topics with US President Donald Trump during his visit to London next week.

A new wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine - including the most massive airstrike since the start of the war, which also hit the Ukrainian government building in Kiev - has further exacerbated global tensions.
