President Javier Milei did not provide answers to the questionnaire sent to him by the Congressional investigative committee to clarify his alleged involvement with the Libra cryptocurrency project. The document included nine questions about meetings with business leaders and stakeholders linked to the initiative.
The commission requested details about contacts with Mauricio Novelli, Sergio Morales, Hayden Mark Davis, Manuel Terrones Godoy, Bartosz Lipinski, and Peh Chyi Haur (aka Julián Peh), as well as the possible participation of his sister, Karina Milei, Secretary General of the Presidency. The deadline expired on Friday, but the legislators extended the wait until Monday, taking into account the presidential inauguration.
Citations and next steps
Congress has summoned Karina Milei, who must announce by Wednesday whether she will attend the committee or receive five of its members at the Casa Rosada. Current regulations stipulate that she cannot reject the summons.
The body, chaired by Representative Maximiliano Ferraro, summoned Alejandro Melik (head of the Anti-Corruption Office) and María Florencia Zicavo (Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Justice) for Tuesday the 23rd. Both had missed the previous meeting with what the committee considered"excuses without legal basis." It also summoned Paul Starc (Financial Information Unit) and Roberto Silva (National Securities Commission), who had already excused himself in April.
Transparency Claims
The commission ordered the Executive Branch to hand over records of income and expenses at the Casa Rosadany Olivos, official agendas, meeting minutes, Libra files, and a report on the presidential account on X (formerly Twitter). It also announced that it will request data from blockchain platforms to identify suspicious wallets and financial transactions linked to the case. Ferraro stated that"society has a right to the truth."
Possible legal measures
Representative Sabrina Selva warned that if noncompliance persists, the committee will request the Judiciary to execute the subpoenas"by law enforcement." In parallel, the legislators formed a subcommittee composed of Oscar Agost Carreño, Yolanda Vega, Fernando Carbajal, Sabrina Selva, and Mónica Frade, which will coordinate actions with the federal courts. Judge María Servini is handling the Libra case under confidentiality in Comodoro Py.
