At least 25 people were injured, several seriously, in an explosion at a bar in Madrid on Saturday, local authorities said. According to initial official information, the accident occurred in the early afternoon at a restaurant in the Puente de Vallecas district of the Spanish capital.

According to press reports

The force of the explosion caused one of the interior walls of the bar to collapse, and damage was also caused to the apartments in the building in which the bar was located.

Residents were evacuated by arriving authorities, who then sealed off and secured the building. The ruins of the bar were also searched for any further injuries. Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reported that no one was trapped inside.

Several neighboring buildings were also damaged, and drones are being used to assess the damage. The scene of the explosion has been sealed off by authorities.

The daily newspaper El País believes that a gas leak may have caused the explosion, MTI reports.
