Berlin – Following the airspace violation by Russian drones over Poland, concerns are growing in Germany about an attack on a NATO state.

An exclusive INSA survey commissioned by BILD shows that more than half of Germans fear a Putin attack on NATO. A total of 62 percent of respondents fear that Russia could also attack a NATO state such as Poland or Lithuania.

Only 28 percent do not believe in such a scenario, and 10 percent are undecided.

Germans want tougher sanctions against Russia

Many respondents are calling for immediate consequences to show Russia its limits.

► 49 percent are in favor of immediately halting all gas and oil deliveries from Russia to the EU. Only a third (33 percent) are against it.

Background: Even after more than three years of the invasion of Ukraine and 18 EU sanctions packages, plenty of oil and gas still flows from Russia into the EU!

Fossil fuels from Russia despite sanctions

The Finnish energy think tank CREA (Center for Research on Energy and Clear Air) estimates that a total of €21.9 billion in fossil fuels were imported from Russia into the EU between February 2024 and February 2025 – a largely unchanged figure from the previous year (down six percent in value, but only down one percent in volume). This volume even exceeded the €18.7 billion in EU financial aid to Ukraine (2024)!

► The majority is also clear on the issue of Russian money: A whopping 51 percent want frozen assets of oligarchs and sovereign wealth funds in the EU to be used to support Ukraine. Only 29 percent oppose this.
