Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised US President Donald Trump for his “unwavering peace efforts" in brokering the Gaza ceasefire deal.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister also welcomed the return of the last 20 surviving hostages, who had been held captive by Hamas for over two years and were freed earlier today as part of the first phase of Trump’s Gaza peace plan, finally returning home to Israel.

“We welcome the release of all hostages after over two years of captivity. Their freedom stands as a tribute to the courage of their families, the unwavering peace efforts of President Trump and the strong resolve of Prime Minister Netanyahu. We support President Trump’s sincere efforts to bring peace to the region," PM Modi wrote.

PM Modi’s message came following a major development in the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, which came into effect last Friday. Earlier today, Hamas released all 20 remaining living hostages as part of the ceasefire that paused two years of conflict, devastating the Gaza Strip and killing tens of thousands of Palestinians.

Under the agreement, Israel released over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and agreed to allow a surge of food and aid supplies into famine-stricken Gaza.

This is the second time PM Modi has congratulated Trump over the Gaza ceasefire deal. In a previous post on X, Modi said he had spoken with Trump by phone and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan.

Calling Trump his “friend," Modi wrote: “Spoke to my friend, President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks."

Meanwhile, the ‘Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit’ is being hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi later today. The summit will discuss ways to bring lasting peace to Gaza and the wider Middle East. It will be co-chaired by al-Sisi and Trump.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh will represent PM Modi at the summit in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Modi was invited to the summit, which is expected to be attended by nearly 20 other world leaders.

New Delhi has deputed Singh to attend as a special representative of the Prime Minister.
