Jerusalem. US President Donald Trump received a total of 22 standing ovations when he delivered a speech to the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) on Monday.
The US president received a hero's welcome upon his arrival in Tel Aviv. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana declared that the world"needs more Trumps," describing him as a "giant" of Jewish history.
Knesset guardsmen sounded trumpets before lawmakers gave a long round of applause to the delegation that accompanied the Republican.
There were a total of 33 standing ovations as top officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, were cheered by Israeli politicians during a series of speeches praising the work of U.S. officials in bringing peace to the region.
Trump hailed his peace plan between Israel and Hamas as the"historic dawn of a new Middle East."
"This is a very exciting time for Israel and the Near East because we find ourselves in the midst of a new era. The forces of chaos, terror, and ruin that have plagued the region for decades are now weakened, isolated, and totally defeated," he said.
He stated, in his speech, interrupted by several MPs demanding gestures toward Palestine, that"Hamas will be disarmed and Israel's security will no longer be threatened in any way." With the help of the United States, he emphasized,"it has won everything it could by force of arms."
In his turn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a fugitive from the International Criminal Court, spoke of a future"time of peace" and highlighted what he considered "a great victory against the Hamas terrorists and all terrorist actors linked to Iran," while admitting that "the price has been high."
Netanyahu lashed out at all those governments that called for "immediately leaving Gaza and surrendering to Hamas's demands."
"If we had given in to this, the threats would still be there," he declared, lavishing praise on Trump,"the best friend Israel has ever had."
