Viktor Orbán convened the Defense Council early Sunday afternoon due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East – the prime minister announced this on his Facebook page. The conflict between Israel and Iran entered a new phase early Sunday morning, as the United States carried out bombings against three Iranian nuclear facilities, to which the prime minister responded by convening the body.
“The effects of the Iran-Israeli war will reach Europe: we must prepare for demonstrations and a growing terrorist threat,” Orbán wrote in his post, adding that Hungary is in a more favorable position because “we did not allow Hungary to become an immigration country.” The Prime Minister announced that the necessary steps will be taken to guarantee the country’s peace and security.
Donald Trump announced on Saturday evening, US time, that the US had carried out targeted airstrikes against Iran's uranium enrichment facilities. Responding to the developments, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó called on all Hungarian citizens in the Middle East to register for consular protection. Only analysts are currently speculating about the consequences of the war's expansion, but it is certain that oil prices could rise significantly, which will also be felt at home.
