The plane, which was heading to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, crashed near a residential area surrounding the airport, officials said.

The flames from the fire that broke out in the area where the plane crashed were visible from miles away. While there is no immediate information on casualties, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released the following statement.

UPS Flight 2976, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville on Tuesday, November 4th at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will review the incident. The NTSB will conduct the investigation and provide any updates.

It was learned that the airport was closed to flights following the accident.
