According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the suspects are from the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis, and one of them was arrested as he was about to board a flight at Charles de Gaulle airport, the BBC reported. Following their arrest on Saturday evening, the case was taken over by special police units, who could question them for up to 96 hours. The two men were previously on the authorities' database for burglaries.

They entered the gallery with a mechanical lift

The robbers arrived at the Louvre last Sunday morning, shortly after the museum opened to visitors. The gang used a vehicle-mounted mechanical lift (basket lift) to reach the Apollo Gallery, which has a balcony overlooking the Seine River.

The two men broke into the building by cutting through a window with power tools and threatening the guards, who evacuated the building. The thieves then broke open two display cases containing the jewelry. They then fled the scene on a motorbike. The escape was captured on video.

A third of the museum was left without cameras

A preliminary investigation after the incident revealed shocking shortcomings: one-third of the rooms in the attacked part of the museum had no security cameras at all, French media reported.

The robbers spent only four minutes inside before fleeing on two scooters. French authorities have since stepped up security at the country's cultural institutions. The Paris prosecutor's office has declined to comment on the case.

The French justice minister has since admitted that security protocols were"failing".

One of the suspects wanted to fly to Algeria

According to French media, the two suspects were arrested on Saturday evening, at around 10 p.m. local time.

CNN-affiliated BFMTV, citing sources familiar with the matter, claims that one of the men was about to board a plane bound for Algeria.

According to BFMTV, the suspects are around thirty years old and were already known to the police for their previous crimes.

The French Ministry of Culture confirmed that during the approximately seven-minute robbery, two heavily guarded display cases were broken into and nine objects were stolen.

Prosecutor furious over leaked details of Louvre robbery

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed on Saturday that two people had been arrested in connection with last Sunday's Louvre robbery, but angrily criticized the fact that information about the arrest had been leaked to the media in advance, Sky News wrote.

According to the prosecutor, hasty disclosure could only harm the investigation, in which about a hundred investigators are working to find the stolen jewelry and all the perpetrators.

– said the prosecutor. He added: “This revelation can only harm the investigative efforts of the approximately one hundred investigators who are working to find both the stolen jewelry and all the perpetrators.”

The prosecutor confirmed that one of the men was arrested as he was preparing to leave the country from Charles de Gaulle airport.

However, Beccuau did not confirm exactly how many people were arrested in total, nor did he say whether the stolen jewelry was recovered.

As we reported, the burglars entered the Louvre using a truck-mounted basket lift, cut through a window, and made off with priceless French crown jewels. Details of the robbery are gradually emerging as the investigation continues.
