A similar incident was recorded on Friday evening - then the operations of Vilnius and Kaunas airports were temporarily suspended, and border checkpoints with Belarus were also closed.
Another case was recorded on Tuesday evening - according to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center (NKVC), it was one of the most intense balloon influxes this year. At that time, the capital's airport was also suspended, and the previously mentioned border crossings with Belarus were closed.
Due to the recurring incidents, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė is calling a meeting of the National Security Commission on Monday. According to the politician, the meeting promises to seek long-term measures to resolve the crisis. She did not rule out the possibility that a decision will be made on Monday to close the Medininkai and Šalčininkai border crossings with Belarus for a longer period.
For its part, the Presidential Office says that in order to control the situation, it may consider restricting transit to Kaliningrad and closing the border with Belarus for a longer period.
As announced, traffic is currently restricted for four hours - from 9:46 p.m. to tentatively 1:40 a.m.
