The suspect in the fatal shooting near the White House, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged with first-degree murder, and prosecutors will seek the death penalty.

As Ukrinform reports with a message to The Hill, this was reported by the office of the federal attorney for the District of Columbia, Janine Pirro.

According to the investigation, Afghan citizen Rakhmanullah Lakanwal, who shot National Guard officers Sarah Backstrom and Andrew Wolfe, has been charged with several counts in total: unlawful possession of a weapon during a violent crime, aggravated attempted murder, and first-degree murder.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the day before that the Justice Department would seek the death penalty for Lakanval.

As reported, on Wednesday at around 2:15 p.m., a shooting occurred near the Farragut Square metro station in Washington, D.C., injuring two National Guardsmen.

Subsequently, Donald Trump announced the death of 20-year-old National Guardsman Sarah Backstrom.

Lakanwal arrived in the United States in September 2021 under a program for Afghans who worked with the American military.
