The city of Sremska Mitrovica declared Monday, October 20, 2025, the Day of Mourning on the occasion of a serious traffic accident near Jarko, in which three people died, and dozens were injured.

The decision was made at an extraordinary session of the City Council held this morning. During the Day of Mourning, flags will be lowered to half-mast at all public institutions, and all events of an entertaining nature organized by the City and cultural institutions have been cancelled. The City of Sremska Mitrovica announced that the families of the victims will be paid aid of 200,000 dinars to cover funeral costs and other necessary expenses.

Nedimović:"Doctors gave 120 percent of themselves"

The mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, Branislav Nedimović, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and thanked all the health workers who, according to him, showed exceptional courage and professionalism yesterday.

- I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to all the patients at Mitrovica Hospital. For the last two years we have heard criticism about the hospital, but what the doctors, nurses and technicians did yesterday - it was incredible. More than a hundred of them came to work without being invited, out of a sense of duty and solidarity. That was something that cannot be forgotten - said Nedimović.

The mayor confirmed that the victims of the accident are a man from Bosut, a woman from Martinac and a fellow citizen from Sremska Rača.

- This tragedy affected the entire community, that's why we declared the Day of Mourning. The city has taken responsibility, not only financial, but also human - he added.

"Most likely human factor" - ongoing investigation

Nedimović confirmed that according to the first information, the cause of the accident is most likely a human factor, but he emphasized that all details will be determined by the competent authorities.

- Let the prosecution and the police do their job. We don't want to prejudge, but everything points to human error. It is also difficult for the driver, and he and all of us are sorry for everything - said the mayor.

He added that the bus was a double decker with 83 seats, and that it was a contracted transport between the companies HealthCare from Luma and Silver Bus, and not a city regular transport.

- I want to clarify: this was not city transport, but contracted workers' transport. The city will definitely carry out extraordinary checks on all carriers, but I don't want the facts to be manipulated. This is a moment for dignity, not for politics - said Nedimović.

Call for solidarity and dignity

The mayor specifically appealed to citizens and politicians to refrain from spreading misinformation and political fights on social networks.

- I see malicious comments. People, let those who lost their loved ones go. There is no place for politics. Yesterday, many did their best - doctors, nurses, and volunteers, regardless of which political option they belong to. That is the image of Mitrovica as I want to remember it - he said.

Nedimović announced that he himself will attend the voluntary blood donation campaign organized today in the hospital, as an act of support for all those fighting for life.
