Trump attacks Zelensky and Europeans – "No gratitude for our efforts"

Sunday, November 23

US President Donald Trump launched an attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his European allies today, Sunday, in an indirect comment about their reaction to the US's 28-point plan aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian leadership has shown zero gratitude for our efforts, while American weapons continue to flow and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia, the US president stressed in a post on Truth Social.

The US is still selling huge amounts of high-value weapons to NATO for distribution to Ukraine, Trump added in the post.

His comment comes as talks continue in Geneva, Switzerland, on the basis of the American plan, and while he himself has set an ultimatum of next Thursday, November 27, Thanksgiving Day in the US, demanding that Kiev respond by then.

He also threatened to cut off support to Ukraine in the areas of the supply of weapons systems - necessary for its defense against Moscow - and intelligence.

Von der Leyen: Borders cannot be changed by force

Earlier, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, responding to the American proposal, without referring to it directly, had stated that any  credible peace plan must stop the killings without sowing the seeds for a future conflict.

In her statement, she highlighted three key elements that the Commission wants included in the plan to end the war in Ukraine:

  • Ukraine's borders cannot be changed by force
  • No restrictions on Ukraine's armed forces that would leave it vulnerable to future attack
  • The European Union's centrality in securing peace for Ukraine must be fully reflected, with Ukraine ultimately joining our Union.

Besed expects progress – Merz: Don't expect an agreement within days

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said he expects the peace process between Russia and Ukraine to move forward.

He noted, however, that he has not discussed with President Trump a Thanksgiving Day deadline for Ukraine to sign the peace plan that grants more territory to Russia.

Trump said on Friday that he expects Zelensky to sign the plan by the Thanksgiving holiday. The United States has warned Ukraine that it could cut off military aid if it does not sign, Reuters reported.

At the end of the day, the decision will be made by the Ukrainians, Bessett said on NBC's"Meet the Press."

"I am not yet convinced that the solutions that President Trump wants will be found in the coming days," said German Chancellor  Friedrich Merz.

Speaking at the  G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa , Merz said he was skeptical about the likelihood of such an outcome given the current disagreements.
