US President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday afternoon the death of one of the two National Guard members attacked in Washington on Wednesday. Sarah Beckstorm, 20, died from her injuries after being shot in the chest and head. “She just passed away. She’s no longer with us. She’s looking down on us right now,” the president said during his Thanksgiving address.

Beckstorm's father, speaking to the New York Times, had already shared his grim prognosis."I'm holding her hand right now," he said."She has a fatal wound. It's not going to be a recovery."

Authorities are expected to file first-degree murder charges, along with other weapons charges, against Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the man arrested for the attack. The 29-year-old Afghan national shot Beckman and his companion, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, near the Farragut West subway station, close to the White House. Wolfe remains hospitalized after undergoing emergency surgery.

According to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, both had begun their new deployment to Washington just 24 hours earlier. Attorney General Pam Bondi added that Beckstorm had volunteered to work holiday shifts so his colleagues could spend Thanksgiving with their families.
