(Johannesburg = Yonhap News) Reporters Lim Hyeong-seop and Hwang Yun-gi = Korea will host the 2028 Group of 20 (G20) summit.
Accordingly, Korea will serve as the chair of the 2028 G20 Summit, and President Lee Jae-myung will serve as the chairman.
The president, attending the third session of the G20 summit held in South Africa on the 23rd (local time), relayed this information and said,"I will fulfill my role (as chairman) with a great sense of responsibility."
The president emphasized,"The Republic of Korea is a country that co-designed the G20, which has served as a compass for the international community in times of crisis."
He also expressed his determination, saying,"I will assume the presidency in 2028, the 20th anniversary of the launch of the G20 Summit, and continue this journey together (with member countries)." He added,"I will work to solidify the G20's status as the top forum for international economic cooperation."
The president added,"I express my deepest respect and gratitude to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for his outstanding leadership as chairman this year."

South Korea's presidency of the 2028 G20 Summit was formalized through the 'G20 South Africa Summit Declaration' adopted the previous day by the leaders attending this year's summit.
The declaration included the phrase,"We pledge to cooperate under the US presidency in 2026 and meet again in the UK in 2027 and in the Republic of Korea in 2028."
In relation to this, Oh Hyun-joo, 3rd Deputy Director of the National Security Office, emphasized at a press center briefing held in Johannesburg this morning,"Assuming this chairmanship has elevated the nation's prestige."
Vice Minister Oh explained,"With this, President Lee will now chair the G20 Summit, following the UN Security Council and the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit, during his term."
He continued,"In particular, as 2028 marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of the G20, I expect that our country will be able to play a leading role in promoting cooperation on complex international issues."
