What's next for Iván Cepeda after winning the Petrista referendum: What will happen in the Broad Front's strength assessment?

Iván Cepeda defeated Carolina Corcho with 1,540,391 votes to the former health minister's 678,962. A total of 2,753,738 voters were counted, a far from insignificant number.

For Cepeda, a new campaign will now begin, one that promises to be tougher and more complex than what he's had to endure so far with Corcho. He and the former health minister had a cordial relationship, and at no point did they attack each other as pre-candidates. Corcho acknowledged his defeat and confirmed that he will join the senator's campaign, as established in the agreements.

The senator knows that this time it will come at a different price, since other candidates from sectors close to Petrismo, or who were part of the government, will enter the fray to give the impression that they have more sympathies, even if it is a question of continuing the government. Bogotá. Octubre 26 de 2025. Ivan Cepeda celebra junto a sus simpatizantes, tras haber sido seleccionado como el candidato oficial del Pacto Histórico para las elecciones presidenciales del 2026.

Roy Barreras, Daniel Quintero —about whom there are still doubts about his ability to participate—, Clara López, Juan Fernando Cristo, among others, who could appear in the coming months, would be there.

The campaign on the left will intensify over the next five months, promising to be a more heated debate than the one that took place during the Historic Pact.

Cepeda knows this, and that's why, in the middle of his speech, he warned that he won't attack any other candidate and will run an austere campaign."I'm not going to go to debates to insult other pre-candidates, or threaten or denigrate each other," the senator declared.

He also told the other candidates to focus on discussing the country's challenges, concepts, and ideas and not on making threats, hurling insults, and other attacks against the other candidates. Cepeda defended President Gustavo Petro and his legacy.

referred to what should happen in that alliance they are making for 2026,

“It's not about unanimity or agreeing on everything: differences are natural and necessary in a democracy. But it wouldn't make sense to call a referendum in March if there are substantial divergences among those who aspire to lead the Broad Front,” he stated.

President Gustavo Petro has already outlined what could happen and invited other allied sectors to join. “It's important that the Broad Front be articulated now; I propose calling it the Human Front, with presidential candidates from the Green Party, the New U Party, and the liberal parties of Gaitán and López Pumarejo. That would be my preferred party,” said the president.

In the Historic Pact referendum, it could be interpreted that opinion voting prevailed over the machinery, but in the Broad Front, the struggle could be at a different price, as it is known that there are politicians with consolidated structures throughout the country and could take advantage of that advantage.

Cepeda represents the country's more traditional left and is accompanied by several figures such as María José Pizarro, Susana Muhamad, Gloria Flórez, Ali Bantú, and others. These are representative figures who will have to consolidate a stronger team. The senator confirmed that he will continue to run an austere campaign.

Cepeda will have to compete against politicians who have come from traditional backgrounds and who have already garnered support in various regions of the country, including Barreras, Quintero, and Cristo, so it is known that it will not be an easy fight to be elected to carry President Petro's banner into the first round of the presidential election.
