"Trump has no plans to meet with President Putin anytime soon," said a Trump administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Moscow's refusal to immediately cease fire in Ukraine appears to be jeopardizing the Trump-Putin summit, Reuters news agency reported, citing diplomatic sources.

The failure of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to agree to a meeting in a phone call suggests that the Trump-Putin summit may not take place, two senior European diplomats told Reuters.

"I think the Russians wanted too much, and it became clear to the Americans that there would be no deal for Trump in Budapest," a Reuters source said.

"The Russians haven't changed their position at all and they're not going to 'stop where they are,'" the other diplomat said."And, I suppose, Lavrov made the same speech, but Rubio responded with something like 'see you later.'"

However, neither side has publicly abandoned plans to meet in Budapest, and efforts to organize a summit in Hungary"appear to be ongoing," Reuters reports.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó arrived in Washington on Tuesday.
