Russia is not only closely monitoring but also trying to contribute to the resolution of the situation in the Gaza Strip, Russian President Vladimir Putin said today.

"We are not only following carefully, but also trying, together with our partners in the Middle East, to contribute to this solution," said Putin, speaking about the situation in the Gaza Strip, RIA Novosti reports.

At the Russia-Central Asia summit held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Putin said that Russia had received signals that Israel was committed to a peaceful solution and was not interested in"any kind of confrontation".

He said that Russia hopes that US President Donald Trump's initiatives regarding peace in the Gaza Strip will be implemented.

"We strongly hope that these initiatives of the US president will really be put into practice," Putin said.
