The shipping company UPS says one of its planes has crashed at the airport, which has been closed after the accident.

The plane, a three-engine McDonnell Douglas MD-11 with a third engine mounted in the tail, was headed to Honolulu, Hawaii, the FAA said. Louisville's mayor said the plane had 127 tons of jet fuel on board when it took off.

Television images show flames and heavy smoke rising just south of the airport area. Videos shared on social media show a huge fireball erupting after the plane fails to gain altitude during takeoff.

Louisville police are asking people within a five-mile radius of the airport to stay indoors.

There have so far been no reports of deaths or injuries – or survivors – following the accident.
