Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale, said that US President Donald Trump, by recognizing the Moroccan Sahara, “paved the way for the recent historic Security Council resolution.”
Hilal added in a statement to the American network Newsmax that “the date of the Security Council’s adoption of this resolution supporting Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara was turned into a royal decree as ‘Unity Day’.”
He continued: “The celebrations of the Moroccan people on the date of the adoption of this decision also demonstrated the loyalty of the inhabitants of the southern provinces to the Alawite throne.”
The Moroccan diplomat explained that the inhabitants of the southern provinces “also flocked to the streets immediately after the King’s speech to express their joy and satisfaction,” noting that the number of Moroccan citizens in the streets that day was in the millions, to thank King Mohammed VI for his vision to recover the Sahara, and his patience in avoiding war.
Hilal also expressed his gratitude for the role of US President Donald Trump in adopting the resolution, stating that “Trump is the first leader of a superpower to recognize the Moroccan Sahara.”
He added: “The first leader in the world who was convinced that there is a path to hope and unity, yes, thank you to President Trump,” noting that the current situation has ended, and the American president wants peace and to revive friendly relations.
Hilal stressed that Trump’s efforts “paved the way for many countries to follow his approach, alongside France, the United Kingdom and Germany, which currently support autonomy in the Sahara as the only solution to the conflict.”
Hilal pointed out that King Mohammed VI “was keen to mention Trump’s name as a friend of his and the Moroccan people, as he was the reason for this historic decision.”
Hilal concluded by saying: “We hope that President Donald Trump will visit the Sahara, and we also hope that through the wisdom and vision of the two leaders, King Mohammed VI, who strongly defended our territorial integrity, and President Donald Trump, we will reach an end to the conflict in this matter by next year.”
