The opposition leader sent a message through her social networks in which she expressed her gratitude for the recognition received for being awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
“This immense recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is an impetus to complete our task: to conquer freedom,” the opposition leader began by saying.
“We are on the threshold of victory and today more than ever we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the people of Latin America and the democratic nations of the world as our main allies to achieve Freedom and democracy ,” he added.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced, highlighting her"tireless" defense of democracy against the "brutal" regime of Nicolás Maduro.
As observers expected, the award slipped through the net for US President Donald Trump, on the very day that the truce between Israel and Hamas, agreed under pressure from the Republican president, came into effect in Gaza.
The White House took a critical view of the news, saying the Nobel Prize winner favored political criteria.
“President Trump will continue to make peace deals, end wars, and save lives,” White House communications director Steven Cheung wrote in X.
“The Nobel committee has proven that it puts politics above peace,” he said.
In a call with the committee secretary while it was still dark in Venezuela, the leader appeared stunned and excited to hear the news. “Oh my God,” she said, according to the video posted on the Nobel X account.
"I'm sure we'll win. This is certainly the greatest recognition for our people, who truly deserve it," Machado said.
The leader, who already has three major international prizes - Nobel, Sakharov and Vaclav Havel - has been living in hiding since Nicolás Maduro's re-election in the July 2024 presidential elections, which the opposition denounced as fraudulent. The opposition leader has been living in hiding since after the presidential elections of July 28, 2024, in which Maduro claimed victory amid allegations of fraud.
