Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in Berlin on Sunday, where talks on options for ending the war in Ukraine will continue.
Answering journalists' questions in audio format via WhatsApp on his way to Berlin, Zelensky indicated that he would meet with Witkoff and Kushner in person.
Zelensky stressed that since several NATO countries are against Ukraine's admission to the alliance, Ukraine must receive strong security guarantees from the United States and its European allies, similar to those offered to NATO member states.
"These security guarantees are an opportunity to prevent a new wave of Russian aggression," he said, adding that"this is already a compromise on our part."
Zelensky stressed that any security guarantees would have to be legally binding and supported by the US Congress. He said he expected an update after a meeting between Ukrainian and US military officials in Stuttgart.
The Ukrainian president said he would meet separately with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and possibly other European leaders on Sunday evening. Media reports suggest a summit in Berlin on Monday involving Zelensky and several European leaders is planned.
