Democratic leader in the US Senate Chuck Schumer sharply criticized Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for Ukraine and called Vladimir Putin a bandit and a butcher.

Schumer made this statement at a ceremony honoring the victims of the Holodomor at New York's main Catholic church, St. Patrick's Cathedral.

According to the senator, there is only one word to describe Trump's plan - capitulation. He emphasized that the proposals, which include the transfer of part of the Donetsk region to Russia and restrictions on the Armed Forces of Ukraine, are unacceptable and will create conditions for new aggression.

"Vladimir Putin is a bandit and a butcher, and Trump's so-called peace plan gives this bandit and butcher almost everything he wants," the politician noted, recalling Russia's massive shelling of Ukrainian cities, strikes on critical infrastructure, and the kidnapping of Ukrainian children.

Schumer believes that the terms outlined in the plan would literally give Russia a springboard for a new invasion, they have nothing to do with real peace. He also emphasized that the US president misinterprets the role of the aggressor. Trump rolled out the red carpet and personally received Putin on American soil… – the senator noted. – He forgets who first unleashed this war.

Ukraine needs real security guarantees, not unilateral concessions, Schumer stressed. Any serious peace agreement must ensure that Ukraine remains free and sovereign with the full ability to defend its territory, he said.

The politician noted that Ukraine has demonstrated to the world its ability to stand up to a dictator, while Russia has become a global pariah. He drew parallels between the Holodomor and modern warfare, saying that the world has already seen the consequences of inaction during mass atrocities.

Supporting Ukraine means supporting every person who strives for freedom, said a convinced Schumer. As long as I am the leader (of the Democrats – ed.) in the US Senate, I will do everything in my power to ensure that we support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in difficult times, he emphasized, calling for the fight to continue. We will win! – the senator exclaimed.

As Ukrinform reported, according to American media, the Trump administration has developed a plan with Moscow to end the war in Ukraine, which consists of 28 points.

Kyiv is allegedly expected to give up the areas under its control in Donbas, reduce the army and a significant part of its weapons. In exchange, security guarantees are offered in the event of future Russian aggression. Ukraine is also required to enshrine in its Constitution a provision that it will never join NATO, and the Alliance must include a clause in its charter stating that Ukraine's future membership is impossible. NATO, in turn, will not station troops on the territory of Ukraine.

In addition, the plan provides for holding elections in our country 100 days after the signing of the agreement.

On Saturday, Trump said his peace plan for Ukraine is not a final proposal.
