Wess makes it clear: “The accusation is false and remains false!” He addresses his plea more to the audience and the journalists than to the judge or the lay judges – and grins broadly again and again.

He says,"I always tell my students at university: I can't prove that I haven't cheated on my wife. The prosecution still has to provide the proof. Something can't be done just because there's a lot of pressure."

Benko's mother was provided with "needs-based funds." Wess stated,"There was no evidence that an additional €300,000 could have been accessed."

He requests acquittal. His reasoning:"I am deeply convinced that if we bring the proceedings to a conclusion in such an objective and fair manner, you will have no choice but to acquit Mr. Benko on both counts, based on your conscience and the professional judge."
