US President Donald Trump will meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on November 8, but it is still unclear where, writes Bloomberg, citing an American source.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said this week that Orbán would meet with Trump in Washington to discuss Hungary's defense against the effects of US sanctions on Russian oil, although the minister said the US sanctions have not yet had any impact on Hungary's imports of Russian energy.

Viktor Orbán, on the other hand, said in Rome that he would soon travel to Washington to discuss the sanctions, and then added: “I am particularly interested in how we could create a workable system for the Hungarian economy, as Hungary is heavily dependent on Russian oil and gas. Without them, prices would skyrocket and there could be a serious supply shortage.”

Hungary depends on Moscow for most of its oil and gas imports. Unlike many European Union countries that sought to reduce their dependence on Russian energy after Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Hungary has increased its purchases. This dependence could now pose an energy supply risk for Hungary, as the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia's largest oil producers.

The Hungarian government tried to convince the American leadership that due to its geographical location it had no choice but to rely on Russian oil, even though it could also receive oil through the Adriatic pipeline.

A senior U.S. diplomat over the weekend explicitly rejected the Hungarian arguments. “Hungary, unlike many of its neighbors, has not made any plans or taken any active steps” to reduce Russian energy imports, Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday. “So we will continue to work with them, and we will work with their neighbors, like Croatia, as well as other countries that can help them overcome their dependence,” he added.
