The United States may withdraw support for Ukraine's defense struggle against Russia, the US president's eldest son said at a conference in the Middle East this weekend.
For almost four years, Russia has waged a full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, killing tens of thousands of civilians.
But this weekend, it was Ukraine and Europe that got their revenge when the son of US President Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr., attended a conference in Doha, Qatar.
In a long tirade against the war in Ukraine, Donald Trump Jr. also said that Ukraine's corrupt royals had fled the country and left what they believed was the peasantry to fight the war.
This is reported by the British newspaper The Guardian.
Trump Jr. also said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prolonged the war because he knew he would never win an election if the war ended. He claimed that Zelensky had become almost a god-like figure on the left.
He also claimed that Ukraine is far more corrupt than Russia. However, the international corruption index of Transparency International shows that the opposite is the case. There, Ukraine is in 105th place, while Russia is in 154th place.
Attack the EU
According to The Guardian, Trump Jr.'s comments reflect the resentment some in the Trump camp have toward the Ukrainian government. They come as Trump's negotiating team puts pressure on Kyiv to cede territory to Russia.
Trump Jr. also attacked EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, saying that European sanctions were not working, as they had only increased oil prices – which enabled Russia to finance its war.
The US president's son said that while working to mobilize voters for the 2022 congressional elections, he met only three people who believed that the war in Ukraine was among the ten most important political issues.
When asked if it was possible that his father – who ran for office on the promise that he could bring peace to Ukraine – would simply withdraw, Trump Jr. replied that it might happen, adding that his father is one of the most unpredictable people in politics.
He promised that the United States would no longer be the idiot with the checkbook.
The United States has been a crucial supporter of Ukraine, supplying large quantities of weapons, including air defense systems that are essential for protecting Ukrainian cities from Russian attacks, and providing intelligence that is vital on the battlefield.
European leaders meet Zelensky
Russia has recently been advancing along the front line in eastern Ukraine and is carrying out massive missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. 29 different targets in Ukraine were hit in Russian attacks on Saturday night.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that 653 drones and 51 missiles were used, of which 585 drones and 30 missiles were shot down. In Kyiv, three people were injured.
French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will meet with the Ukrainian president on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the ongoing negotiations under American mediation.
“Ukraine can count on our unwavering support,” Macron wrote on Twitter on Saturday.
