The head of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBT) said today that any nuclear weapons test would be detrimental to global non-proliferation efforts and peace and security.
In a statement issued after US President Donald Trump ordered the US military to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing, OSPAPD Executive Secretary Robert Floyd said he was aware of public statements drawing attention to existing concerns about nuclear weapons testing.
Harmful and sterilizing
Any nuclear weapons test conducted by any state would be detrimental and destabilizing to global non-proliferation efforts and to international peace and security. The NPT's monitoring system is ready to record such tests and provide the data to the states that have signed the Treaty, Floyd said.
Like others, I see in this complex and challenging moment an opportunity for world leaders to step forward and work together, on an equal footing, towards the ratification of the Treaty on the Comprehensive Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the shared goal of a world free of nuclear weapons tests, he added.
