Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit said that “the upcoming legislative elections are a special occasion to strengthen the Moroccan democratic model and ensure the continuity and permanence of state institutions, in full respect of what the constitution stipulates regarding their organization.”
Laftit confirmed on Wednesday, during a meeting of the Committee on Interior, Territorial Communities, Housing and Urban Policy in the House of Representatives, that “the proposed amendments to the legislative framework governing these elections come after fruitful and constructive consultations with party actors.”
During the meeting, which was dedicated to presenting draft laws related to this democratic occasion, the speaker told all the attending members of parliament that “these amendments came after meetings that were held with political actors based on the royal directives issued in the last Throne Day speech.”
The spokesperson stated that “the meetings that took place during the beginning of last August and throughout the last month of September made it possible to finalize the schedule of measures that will concern the House of Representatives elections for the year 2026.”
He also highlighted that it “aims to provide and secure the necessary political and field mechanisms to ensure the success of the electoral processes, achieve acceptable and encouraging participation, and conduct free and fair elections that truly reflect the will of the Moroccan voter, while contributing to the emergence of institutions capable of meeting the challenges at hand.”
In this regard, Laftit praised “the positions and proposals of all political bodies stemming from a spirit of responsibility, confidence and determination to continue strengthening the democratic option,” also noting “the positive climate that characterized the consultations led by the Ministry with these bodies within the framework of an expanded consultative approach, which helped to bring together the parties regarding the amendment of the legal framework governing the upcoming elections.”
The same official reviewed details regarding these meetings, which concerned political parties represented in parliament and those not represented, based on the directives contained in the recent Throne Speech, which stipulated amending the electoral laws before the end of this year and opening the door to good preparation for the upcoming elections.
The meeting of the Committee on the Interior, Territorial Communities, Housing and Urban Policy witnessed the presence of a large number of parliamentary deputies, especially those who hold other delegated duties at the level of territorial communities, and who remain concerned with some of the amendments targeting Organic Law No. 27.11 relating to the House of Representatives.
