Trump's Accusations and Threats Against Colombia

Impact on Security and Crime

Senator Lindsey Graham said that Donald Trump plans to impose"significant tariffs" against Colombia as part of his strategy to combat drug trafficking.

As he explained on his official X account, the president told him that he would hit “ not only the drug traffickers, but also where it hurts the most: in the pocket.” Graham added that the announcement of the measures would be made “today or tomorrow.”

The Republican lawmaker recounted a meeting with Trump about the countries that, according to him and the US president, facilitate or support drug trafficking to the United States.

According to his version, the president reaffirmed his commitment to"pursue those linked to drug trafficking activities" that affect American security.

Trump accuses Gustavo Petro of being a"drug trafficking leader" and announces the end of subsidies to Colombia.

US President Donald Trump accused Colombian President Gustavo Petro of being a “drug trafficking leader” and stated that he will eliminate all subsidies or payments that his government provides to Colombia.

The Republican did not present evidence to support his statements, made through his social media platform Truth Social.

In his message, the US president stated that drug trafficking “has become Colombia’s biggest business” and maintained that Petro “does nothing to stop it,” despite “large-scale payments and subsidies from the United States.”

Trump called these funds "a long-term scam" and announced that, starting this Friday,"any other form of payment or subsidy will no longer be made to Colombia."

He also noted that drugs produced in the South American country would be destined for "mass sale to the United States, causing death, destruction, and havoc."

The Republican leader misspelled the country's name as "Columbia" in his post.
