Who is to blame? The residents accuse that they smelled gas and no one did anything. Distrigaz specifies: The area has been shut down since yesterday

Friday, October 17

People are posting messages on social media accusing the authorities of not doing their job, and accusing fingers are also pointed at Distrigaz.

"The Distrigaz people came to check and said there was nothing," someone wrote.

"Even when the explosion happened, they were there, they gathered their tools and left," someone else wrote.

"The gas has been off in the building in front for two days," someone else revealed. "The elevators were beeping and with the gas off, there was a smell from the affected building," another internet user specified.

"I've been to Distrigaz several times," someone else insisted.

Several residents of the block of flats damaged by the morning explosion told Antena 3 CNN that there had been a strong smell of foul smell in the block since Thursday.

"Yesterday it smelled of gas all day, the people from Distrigaz came, they turned off the gas," a man who lives in the stairwell next to the block where the explosion took place told HotNews.

"Yesterday morning there was an unbearable smell on the stairs of the apartment building. It was coming from the basement, from below. I called Distrigaz, they came, turned off our gas, said everything was ok. The people from Electrica came, said it was carbon monoxide from some electrical wires. It was the same until last night. Oh, but it's not going away from those wires? I smelled it all night, I smelled it in the morning, now it exploded. No one came last night. They sprayed it there and left. They washed their hands, they did absolutely nothing. Except they turned off the gas. Otherwise they did nothing, nothing."

Distrigaz confirmed that the gas has been turned off since Thursday

In a video obtained by Mediafax, a dialogue between the fire crew on site and a Distrigaz representative also emerges.

"Let Distrigaz come and do its job," is heard in the background. While the Distrigaz representative approached the fire crew on site. He provided clarification when he was told to turn off the gas in the area.

"It's shut down. This area has been shut down since yesterday. All of this is shut down... There were losses," the Distrigaz representative said.

Cătălin Chirteș, the director of Distrigaz, stated that an analysis meeting is taking place and a press release with the company's position after this tragedy is to be sent, according to Gândul.

One of the first hypotheses is that a gas leak led to the power outage. But between the time of the outage and the explosion, someone would have restarted the power in the block affected by the explosion.

Raed Arafat stated that the explosion in Sector 5 of the capital, near Dimitrie Bolintineanu High School, was most likely caused by a gas accumulation.

So far, it is known that 13 people are hospitalized in Bucharest hospitals. Three were taken to Floreasca, one to Bagdasar and another person to Universitar, with burns. Two children are hospitalized at Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital, one of them is in critical condition.
