US President Donald Trump has not yet made a decision on possible strikes on Venezuelan territory or a ground operation, CNN reported, citing a White House spokesperson and a senior US official.
The channel's interlocutors hinted at the possibility of a diplomatic resolution. According to the official, as US military forces amass in Venezuela, Trump hopes the pressure will be sufficient to force the country's president, Nicolas Maduro, to resign without resorting to direct military action.
On November 17, Trump stated that Venezuela wants to negotiate, and the United States might be willing to engage in such dialogue. Reuters reported that Maduro is facing growing pressure from Washington amid a major US military buildup in the Caribbean.
The day before, NBC reported that the US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford had arrived in the Caribbean as part of a major military buildup. US strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific have killed at least 80 people since September. The administration has provided no evidence that the destroyed boats were carrying drugs or were linked to narco-terrorism, NBC notes.
