Budapest Summit and Trump-Putin Meeting Plans

Peace Negotiations and Territorial Concessions

As we wrote, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he had a “very productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which they made “great progress” on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. The two leaders agreed that their advisers would meet next week and then meet in person in Budapest to discuss the possibility of peace.

According to a report by Axios

Volodymyr Zelensky was caught off guard by news of the meeting, especially in the capital of a country he considers least friendly to Ukraine.

According to the publication, "the Ukrainian president and his team were surprised by Trump's statement that he had spoken with Vladimir Putin and agreed to meet with him in Hungary."

Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, hoping the White House will agree to the transfer of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. Shortly after the Ukrainian president landed at Andrews on Thursday, Trump spoke by phone with Putin and agreed to a meeting in Budapest.

The Ukrainian president is visiting the United States for the third time since January. Upon his arrival on Thursday, he said that Moscow"will hurry to resume dialogue as soon as it learns about the Tomahawks."

Donald Trump was asked earlier this week whether he was considering supplying Ukraine with advanced missiles with a range of 2,500 kilometers, and he replied:"We'll see... Maybe so," the BBC wrote.

The move has raised concerns in Kiev

Meanwhile, Bloomberg analysts are warning that the Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest could buy the Kremlin time and weaken support for Ukraine instead of peace. The portal reports that the move has raised concerns in Kiev and among the United States' European allies.

After a two-hour phone call with Putin, Trump said he was ready to"find a real path to peace," but did not say whether he intended to provide Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine or whether he planned to impose new sanctions on Russia.

In the Oval Office, the US president told reporters that "the United States of America needs Tomahawks too. So I don't know what we can do about it."

The Kremlin reported that Putin warned Trump that any missile transfer to Ukraine would “cause serious damage to relations between our countries.” Analysts say Trump is likely to choose “the carrot, not the stick.”

The Putin-Trump meeting will be a painful blow to the EU, but it could strengthen Viktor Orbán's position

According to an article in The Telegraph, the Trump-Putin meeting will be a painful blow to the European Union and will also strengthen the influence of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán within the community.

“The choice of Hungary as the summit venue has likely wiped the smile off the EU’s face. The bloc has largely been left out of the Ukraine peace talks and is also concerned about the secondary role it has played in the Gaza peace plan,” the portal reported.

The newspaper also mentioned that European diplomats are hoping for a change of power in Hungary, as Orbán is obstructing the implementation of EU policies. The Trump-Putin talks in Budapest, which Trump said could take place within two weeks, could further strengthen the Hungarian prime minister's position on the world stage.

The US president spoke about the possible date of the meeting at an event at the White House on Thursday, where he also stated that the meeting would be hosted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Donald Trump stressed that he will brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday about his talks with the Russian leader. He noted that the relationship between the presidents of the two warring countries is"terrible" and that he will therefore hold two "equivalent" meetings with them, MTI reported.
