Democratic Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani appears to be the frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race, maintaining a comfortable lead over former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is contesting as an independent, according to several new polls.

A Marist Poll conducted between October 24 and 28 found Mamdani leading Cuomo by 16 points among likely voters, 48 percent to 32 percent, with Republican Curtis Sliwa drawing 16 percent. The survey polled 792 likely voters and has a margin of error of ±4.2 percentage points.

A separate AtlasIntel survey, conducted between October 31 and November 2, painted a closer race, placing Mamdani 4.5 points ahead of Cuomo — 43.9 percent to 39.4 percent. That poll included 2,404 respondents and carried a margin of error of ±2 percentage points.

Meanwhile, a Fox News poll conducted over the same period as Marist’s found a similar gap to the first, showing Mamdani at 47 percent, Cuomo at 31 percent, and Sliwa at 16 percent. The poll, based on 971 likely voters, has a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.

A self-proclaimed democratic socialist from an elite family, Mamdani was born in Uganda to parents of Indian descent and has lived in the United States since he was seven, becoming a naturalized US citizen in 2018.

He would be New York’s first-ever Muslim mayor if elected.

Mamdani boasts a strong base of young and immigrant voters thanks largely to a campaign focused on the soaring cost of living in the city of some 8.5 million residents.

He has promised more rent control, free day care and buses, and city-run neighborhood grocery stores.

Mamdani has attracted scorn from President Donald Trump, who calls him a “little communist," but the New York State assemblyman has brushed off the criticism.
