Israeli forces struck about a hundred targets throughout Iranian territory, including uranium enrichment facilities.
Senior Iranian military leaders, such as the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, and the chief of staff of the armed forces, Mohammad Bagheri, were also targeted, who were killed in the attacks.
Israel says the strikes were necessary to stop Iran's nuclear ambitions and military plans, which threaten Israel's security.
Iran responded by launching more than 100 ballistic missiles into Israeli territory.
Most of the rockets were shot down by Israeli air defense systems, but the strikes caused damage in areas of Tel Aviv and other cities, injuring dozens of people, some of them seriously.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the United States was informed in advance of the planned operation, but the US was not directly involved in the attacks.
The US also helped Israel shoot down some of the rockets fired at the country. Meanwhile, the international community has expressed concern about tensions in the region and urged both sides to refrain from further action and seek diplomatic solutions.
