Spain refuses to increase its defense spending. For this reason, US President Donald Trump has threatened to double US tariffs on imports from the country, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Trump made the warning after a NATO summit in The Hague, where allies agreed to increase their annual spending on their armies and military infrastructure to 5 percent of their gross domestic product, part of the alliance's biggest rearmament program since the end of the Cold War.
However, Spain claims that it can fulfill its specific commitments to NATO without allocating 5% of its GDP.
Trump described Madrid's position as"terrible." "Spain is the only country... that refuses to pay," the US president noted."I will not allow this... It's not fair," he continued."We are negotiating a trade agreement with Spain. We are going to make them pay double. And I actually mean this," Trump added.
Trump declared the decision of NATO allies to spend 5% of GDP on defense and related costs by 2035 as his personal great success, DPA notes."This is a monumental victory for the United States, because we have contributed much more than our fair share," the US president said after the alliance's summit in The Hague.
