Indonesia/Sumatra Flood Casualties and Search Efforts

Survival and Resource Scarcity

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto ensured that the government continues to meet the needs of residents who were displaced by flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra (Sumut), and West Sumatra (Sumbar).

Prabowo explained that aid for the refugees was being sent non-stop via land and air routes.

Logistics delivery utilizes helicopters, Hercules aircraft, and the Indonesian Air Force's newest transport aircraft, the A400M.

"We have dispatched three Hercules C130 aircraft and one A400 aircraft. For the umpteenth time, we are sending aid. The government has moved quickly from the first days to react, has sent aid by land and air, and we continue to support their needs on the ground," said Prabowo in a video clip uploaded to the official account of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, @presidenrepublikindonesia, reported by ANTARA, Saturday (11/29/2025).

The video also shows a number of MBG kitchens in the affected areas being converted into public kitchens for evacuees.

Among them, the MBG kitchen is managed by SPPG Daulat Lae-Langge and SPPG Subulussalam in Aceh, as well as SPPG Cengkeh Turi Binjai Utara in North Sumatra.

In the same video, Prabowo, at the commemoration of National Teachers' Day in Jakarta, also expressed his condolences to the victims and families affected by the disasters in the three provinces.

"Let us always unite and work together, praying for and helping our brothers and sisters affected by the disaster. Hopefully, we can get through this difficult time soon," said Prabowo.

Indonesian National Armed Forces soldiers deliver aid from helicopters flying from Jakarta to flood and landslide disaster areas on Sumatra Island.

Acceleration of Disaster Emergency Response

Previously, the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, instructed his staff to focus on accelerating emergency disaster management on Sumatra Island.

The three affected areas that have received the attention of the central government are North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh Province.

"Management efforts must be maximized as the weather in the affected areas is starting to improve," Suharyanto said virtually on Saturday (11/19/2025).

BNPB will prioritize three things, including search and rescue operations for missing victims, restoring communication access, and distributing logistics to affected residents.

Suharyanto emphasized that search and rescue operations in the North Sumatra area were focused on the Sibolga, Central Tapanuli, and South Tapanuli areas.

Meanwhile, in Central Tapanuli and South Tapanuli, several people are still reported missing.

In line with this, logistics distribution will also be encouraged, especially to areas that are still isolated, such as Central Tapanuli.

MI-17 helicopters and two other helicopters were put on standby to distribute logistical aid, equipment and food in remote areas.

Meanwhile, the accelerated distribution of logistical aid to Sibolga will be coordinated to be carried out via sea routes at Jago-jago Port with the deployment of ships from the Indonesian Navy.

"To restore communication access, BNPB has also distributed Starlink units to affected districts/cities, including Central Tapanuli, Sibolga, and South Tapanuli," said Suharyanto.
