Plans for a new summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have been suspended, according to a US administration official, quoted by the AP.
The meeting between the presidents of the two countries had been announced last week and would take place in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, although no date had been announced.
The decision was made after a phone call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"Secretary Rubio and Minister Lavrov had a productive call," the White House official added, as quoted by Politico."Therefore, an in-person meeting between the secretary and the minister is not necessary, and there are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the near future." The two leaders met in Alaska about two months ago.
At a press conference, Lavrov said he informed Rubio that Russia's position had not changed and that a comprehensive peace agreement with several guarantees would have to precede a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said Tuesday that there was no urgency in scheduling the meeting."Preparation is needed, serious preparation," he told reporters.
The Ukrainian president and European leaders accused Putin of playing for time in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, opposing Ukraine's ceding Russian-conquered territory in exchange for peace, as Trump has suggested.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump said his expected summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping may not happen either, during a White House lunch with Republican senators.
"It might not happen. Things might happen where someone might say, for example, 'I don't want to meet,'" Trump said. A meeting between the two leaders was planned in two weeks in South Korea during the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Forum.
