ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Friday called on the international community to intervene urgently in response to what it described as “continued violations” by Israeli forces and settlers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and across the Occupied West Bank, saying the sanctity of the holy sites and the rights of the Palestinian people were under imminent threat.
The statement comes as Israeli forces killed two Palestinian teenagers during an overnight raid on a town near Ramallah in the West Bank, as violence surges in the territory with a growing number of dead.
While an October 10 ceasefire has largely ended the war in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas group, the West Bank is experiencing increasing violence. Palestinians have faced tightening military restrictions over the past two years, curbing their freedom of movement. Attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers have also escalated.
“We strongly condemn this continuing violation by the Israeli occupying forces and extremist settlers against the Palestinian people, including repeated storming of the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Mosque and provocation against worshippers,” FO Spokesman Tahir Andrabi said in a weekly briefing.
“Pakistan calls upon the international community to take urgent and effective measures to ensure protection of holy sites, prevent settlers’ violence and incursions, and uphold relevant UN resolution.”
The sacred compound of Al‑Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem has in recent weeks seen a sharp rise in violations by Israeli settlers and security forces, intensifying fears among Palestinians of a systematic erosion of its status. According to reports, hundreds of Israeli settlers entered the compound at the start of the Jewish New Year, under heavy police escort, carrying out provocative rituals and dances within the courtyards.
Over the past twelve months alone, more than 58,000 settler incursions were recorded — a fourteen-percent increase over the previous year — as documented by the Palestinian Awqaf authority.
