Lucas Philippe was appointed on Thursday in Marrakech during the 93rd General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization as the new president for a four-year term.

Lucas Philippe, who succeeds Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi of the United Arab Emirates, whose term has expired, received 84 votes, or 51.2% of the votes cast, ahead of Turkey's Mustafa Serkan Sabanca, who garnered 60 votes (36.6%). The two other candidates, Anne-Marie Nainda of Namibia and Demelash Gebremicheal Wewdeyes of Ethiopia, received 12 votes (7.3%) and 8 votes (4.9%), respectively.

The President of Interpol and the other members of the Executive Committee are elected by the General Assembly according to the principle of one country, one vote, according to which each vote has equal weight.

As president, Lucas Philippe’s role during his term will include chairing the meetings of the Executive Committee, which oversees the implementation of decisions taken at the General Assembly.

The role of the president, whose function is performed on a part-time basis and is not remunerated, consists of presiding over the General Assembly and the three sessions of the Executive Committee each year.

Interpol’s statutes require the President to ensure that the Organization’s activities are in accordance with the decisions taken by the General Assembly and the Executive Committee, and to maintain, as far as possible, a direct and constant relationship with the Secretary General of the Organization.
