World leaders said the US peace plan for Ukraine needs “further work” as they try to find a coordinated response to the proposal, the G20 summit in South Africa said.
While welcoming the US efforts, the leaders expressed concern about"proposed restrictions on Ukraine's armed forces."
"We reiterate that the implementation of the elements related to the European Union and NATO would require the consent of the relevant EU and NATO members," their statement added.
European countries were surprised by the plan, which includes major concessions to Russia and was drawn up with little to no input from Ukraine or Europe. The 28-point plan calls for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia, abandon its long-standing ambition of NATO membership and reduce its military.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country faced a choice between losing dignity or vital support from the United States, with Donald Trump giving Kiev until Thursday, November 27, to accept the plan.
