Sydney (Australia) – When two armed terrorists killed at least eleven people and injured countless others on Sydney's famous Bondi Beach during the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, panic gripped the crowds. Only one passerby kept his cool – and disarmed one of the attackers!
A mobile phone video shows the disarmament
A spectacular video from Australia shows the fearless hero of Bondi Beach: The"Chanuka by the Sea" event was taking place on a lawn behind the beach. Visitors can walk across to the beach from a footbridge. There, an attacker stood with a rifle. He aimed at his victims with a telescopic sight and shot at the visitors of the Hanukkah celebration.
His accomplice was standing directly on Campbell Parade and had not noticed that a man (light T-shirt, dark trousers) was hiding behind a car.
The hero of Bondi Beach seized the moment when the terrorist targeted further victims: He attacked the killer from behind, grabbed him, and fought with him. During the struggle, he wrested the pump-action shotgun from the attacker and pointed it at the terrorist, who had fallen to the ground.
Terrorist flees from Bondi Beach hero
The hero's courage must have impressed the attacker: He gives up, walks backwards to his accomplice, who is still firing at the victims from the bridge. At the same time, another passerby throws an object at the fleeing terrorist.
In the next scene of the video, this man – apparently shot in the arm by the second attacker – can be seen hiding behind a tree near the hero of Bondi Beach. He gets up, collapses on the grass. Then the video cuts off.
It is still unclear who the hero is.
The identities of the hero of Bondi Beach and the wounded passerby are still unknown. What is clear, however, is that these two courageous men prevented something far worse from happening.
At Australia's most famous surfing hotspot, more people became helpers:"9News" reporter Damian Ryan reports that the surfers on site offered their boards for the injured: "This is an incredible gesture, a symbol that will be seen in the photos later. Injured people were lying on the surfboards because there weren't enough stretchers."
Chris Minnis, Premier of New South Wales (Australia), has confirmed at a press conference that there have been at least twelve fatalities. Among them is one of the gunmen, who was shot dead by police. The second gunman is currently in critical condition, police wrote on X.
