World reacts with enthusiasm and relief to agreement between Hamas and Israel: 'Turning point in a conflict that has already claimed too many lives'

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 23: U.S. President Donald Trump (L) meets with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres during the 80th session of the UN’s General Assembly (UNGA) at the United Nations headquarters on September 23, 2025 in New York City. The big question is who's still alive. The videos released by Hamas and Islamic Jihad in recent months don't bode well. Completely emaciated, hollow-eyed, and mentally at an all-time low. But still: they were signs of life.

A comfort to the family members who have been living between hope and fear for over 700 days. For many, the last images were many months ago.

Officially, 20 of the 48 hostages are still alive, but Donald Trump has hinted several times in recent weeks that the number is likely lower. Two hostages are believed to be dead, while the deaths of the others are confirmed. This includes Inbar Hayman, the only Israeli woman still in Gaza.

One of the survivors may be 24-year-old Evyatar David. He was seen on video, severely malnourished and forced by the terrorists to dig his own grave in a tunnel. Or Alon Ohel (also 24), the gifted pianist who reportedly lost an eye. He appeared in one of the most recent Hamas videos.

Attention is also focused on twin brothers Ziv and Gali Berman, whose lives were reportedly in grave danger just a few months ago. And on the two hostages with whom Hamas reportedly recently lost contact. The list is, of course, much longer.
