The Trump administration's 28-point peace plan, which would end the Russia-Ukraine war, was leaked on Friday. If the plan is accepted, Ukraine could lose territory but receive security guarantees, the details of which we wrote about here, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's position.
The G20 summit on Saturday will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa. A joint statement was issued at the event and was signed by António Costa, President of the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and the leaders of Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany and Norway. Poland also joined the statement.
According to politicians, the first version of the 28-point plan contains important elements that are essential for a just and lasting peace, and leaders are ready to cooperate for sustainable peace.
It was also stated that
Borders should not be changed by force. We are also concerned about the proposed restrictions on the Ukrainian armed forces, which would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attacks.
The statement emphasized that the implementation of elements related to the European Union and NATO also requires the consent of the EU and NATO member states.
The American, Chinese and Russian leaders are not present.
US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have all canceled their participation in the G20 summit, which is being held on the African continent for the first time. The leaders of Mexico and Argentina will also not attend the event.
The Trump administration is boycotting the meeting entirely, citing the South African government's severe repression of white farmers. South Africa considers the accusation baseless.
Viktor Orbán wrote a letter
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent a letter to European Union member states on Monday, urging a swift agreement on financing Ukraine's budget deficit for next year and 2027. More details can be found here.
According to MTI, in his response letter to Ursula von der Leyen published by Politico, Viktor Orbán wrote:"After reading your letter, I see that the moment of truth has arrived. The new financial demands of the Ukrainian-Russian war force us to face the realities. What we see is sad and disheartening. But it is better to speak honestly and decide now than to continue the policy based on illusions, which unfortunately your committee has done so far."
In his letter, the Prime Minister suggested that “we formulate our Ukraine policy taking into account the following facts.” He then made five points:
- According to the first point of Viktor Orbán's response,"Ukraine cannot win this war on the battlefield. It has already lost about 20 percent of its territory. It will lose more territory as time goes on. It is unreasonable for the commission to support an unwinnable war with political and financial means. Continuing the war will result in thousands of additional victims, a sea of suffering and enormous destruction, without a chance of victory. Of course, Ukraine has the right to continue the war, but we are not obliged to continue supporting and financing an unwinnable conflict."
- According to the second point,"The extent of Ukraine's war suffering can only be limited by a rapid ceasefire and/or a peace agreement. Therefore, we Europeans must immediately and unconditionally support the peace initiative of the President of the United States of America. In addition to supporting the President of the United States, we must immediately initiate independent and direct diplomatic negotiations with Russia."
- The third In point 1, Viktor Orbán writes: “The European Union must urgently begin preparations for the negotiations on the settlement of the post-war situation. The EU must show strength in these negotiations. The EU will not increase its strength, but rather weaken it, if it spends its financial resources on strengthening the Ukrainian army instead of itself. The fate of Ukraine and the Ukrainian military is uncertain. Therefore, Europe cannot build its own security on Ukraine and the Ukrainian army. Europe’s security can only be built on the military strength of the European Union member states and the member states themselves, regardless of the future fate of Ukraine.”
- In point 4, the Prime Minister stated: “Based on all this, I would like to inform you that Hungary does not support the European Union sending any new financial support to Ukraine in any form. Hungary does not wish to participate in such a financial action, and does not agree to such a decision being made in the name and framework of the EU.”
- In point 5, Viktor Orbán considers it regrettable that “the In the shadow of the latest chapter of Ukrainian corruption, which has caused unimaginable financial damage and a crisis of confidence, your proposals do not include auditing the money spent so far or subjecting further disbursements to stricter conditions.”
“Dear Madam President! It is better to realize your mistake in time and turn away from the impasse than to continue until you hit the wall of reality. We have already burned a huge amount of European money in this war. If you continue like this, it will drag the entire European Union into a serious crisis,” Viktor Orbán wrote in closing the letter, wishing you much strength and courage to make the difficult decision.
